The protest by farmers

More demonstrations are planned in protest at a proposed waste disposal incinerator overlooking a Lanarkshire village.

The warning from campaigners came after farmers used tractors on a go-slow at Canderside Toll, near Stonehouse, which is used by motorists to get to and from the M74, as well as the Larkhall area.

Farmers in almost 30 tractors drove slowly round the toll for 30 minutes to highlight the disruption a convoy of 75 lorries servicing the proposed incinerator 24 hours a day is likely to have locally.

The protest, reported in yesterday’s Evening Times, caused lengthy tailbacks and was the first show of public dissent to be organised by the Dovesdale Action Group.

They are angry at plans submitted by Scotgen to South Lanarkshire Council for a waste disposal complex at Dovesdale Farm, which overlooks the village of Stonehouse.

Leading campaigner Paul McGillivray said: “The numbers alone show how opposed the farming community is to this proposed incinerator.

“The farmers are in the frontline of this battle because they will see, before anyone else, the consequences of any fall-out or contamination from this plant.

“This is just the first demonstration of many we have planned over coming weeks.”

Scotgen says the proposed incinerator will cost £50million and create 50 jobs. It will handle up to 160,000 tonnes of domestic and industrial waste and generate enough “green energy” to power 90,000 homes.
