Government approves incinerator in Invergordon

The Government Reporter has overturned refusal of planning permission for a waste incinerator at Invergordon, awarding partial costs against Highland Council which had refused planning consent in August 2009. The ruling follows a long campaign by locals who are concerned about possible health effects. One anguished resident said "Sorry we did our best I am devastated" while another said "If this was England we could appeal (or similar) but as we are geographically incongruent with England we can’t do a sodding thing."

Tina McCaffery is urging fellow campaigners not to give up, and has asked if anyone is able to offer help and advice on appealing against the decision.

Highland Council solicitor Paul Adams has asked to meet local campaigners.
The decision can be seen at http://www.dpea.scotland.gov.uk/CaseDetails.aspx?T=8&id=qJ10204#Categories

Re: Government approves incinerator in Invergordon

I am very concerned about this. The Scottish Government Reporter Mr Onn stated that although energy-from-waste undoubtedly pollutes and cannot be considered a long term solution, it is necessary “until communities learn to behave in a way which reduces waste to that which can be re-used or recycled.” This is pessimism writ large. We have to provide financial incentives, as well as practical assistance to encourage communities to maximise recycling - click here for feature article.
